About Malar Augmentation procedure in London
Malar Augmentation is the use of synthetics or biologicals to augment,
or make the cheek bone structure of the face more prominent.

About Malar Augmentation procedure in London
A relatively under-developed mid-face is source of imbalance with several effects:

  • around the eyes it leads to a lower position of the lid margin, with a downward eyelid slant and a slightly more rounded eye (rounded palpebral fissure): commonly young patients will have lower lid bags

  • in the malar region it leads to a flatter appearance, with poorer definition

  • around the nose it leads to an earlier than usual appearance of the lines going to the corner of the mouth (naso-labial folds)

Sometimes, under the appearance of flatter cheekbones there is a more extensive problem of small maxilla (upper jaw bone) which may benefit from addressing. However, in most cases, dental occlusion is good and a cosmetic procedure can bring both enhanced definition in the cheek area, as well as better support for the lower lid.

The options for Malar Augmentation include using either your own bone harvested usually from the skull bones, or more commonly, synthetic implants.

Facial surgery is most often done to bring the face into balance by building up the chin, the cheeks, or the jaw.

Facial implants help change the basic structure of the face to give a fuller, more balanced look.

The Malar Augmentation consultation in London
At the consultation you will have the opportunity to discuss with your surgeon the degree of enhancement that you seek both over the cheek prominence and around the lower eyelid and mid-cheek areas. Be sure to inform your surgeon of any previous surgery or history of infection in the sinuses and it may impact on your operation. You will also be given the option to decide on the type of implants to be used as well as the size and design of the implant out of a relatively large variety. The most common implants used in our practice are semirigid ones, which once fixed to the facial bones feel and natural as the facial skeleton.

A good candidate for the Malar Augmentation would usually have a slight hollow appearance of the cheeks and possibly slightly deeper lines running from the corner of the nose. Trying to achieve a very prominent appearance of the cheekbones is likely to lead to an artificial facial shape any is best avoided.

Your Malar Augmentation operation in London
The Malar Augmentation procedure normally requires a general anaesthetic and can be performed as a day-case. There are several options for the implants, which should be discussed at your consultation. The incisions are made on the inside of the mouth, so there are no external scars. The implants are then fixed in position and the wounds closed. You will need to have a soft diet for a period of 4-5 days, to protect the gingival wounds.

Sometimes, a smaller degree of Malar Augmentation can be performed with a moderate fat transfer. In a similar way, when there is a more significant asymmetry between the two cheek-bones, improvement in symmetry can be achieved with implants possibly complemented by fat transfer for a higher level of accuracy.

Cheek implants are usually inserted through an incision in the mouth and placed directly on (or even below) the cheekbone. These implants can vary in size and shape.

You may be surprised to find that most people won't recognize that you've had facial implant surgery -- only that you look better.
